Brain fog, that mental haze that descends at the most inconvenient times. It’s a common and often frustrating symptom experienced by many women. Its not a distinct medical condition, but rather a term used to describe a range of cognitive difficulties such as forgetfulness, lack of mental clarity and difficulty concentrating.
For women, brain fog often occurs as a symptom of various health concerns, including perimenopause, menopause, endometriosis, fibromyalgia and more. The cause? Hormonal fluctuations that come with these life stages and conditions. For me brain fog has been a constant for years due to the endo and now menopause.
Why does it happen?
Hormones play a vital role. When hormone levels fluctuate, especially during perimenopause and menopause, the brain may experience changes and impact cognitive function. Conditions like endometriosis and fibromyalgia can also contribute to brain fog, adding extra challenges to daily life.
Many things can assist with brain fog and the ones I have tried are...
Staying Hydrated – Dehydration can increase cognitive difficulties. Make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day to support optimal brain function. I try and make sure I drink 2 refills od my water bottle.
Regular Exercise - Engage in regular physical activity. Exercise not only supports overall well-being but also enhances cognitive function and reduces stress. I try to keep up with my yoga routine.
Adequate Sleep - Prioritise quality sleep. Lack of sleep can significantly contribute to brain fog. Create a relaxing bedtime routine and ensure you get sufficient rest.
Stress Management - Practice stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or deep breathing exercises. Chronic stress can worsen cognitive function. Meditation is something I find so useful to manage day to day stress.
Supplements - Consult with a healthcare professional about supplements that may support cognitive health, such as vitamin B complex, vitamin D, and ginkgo biloba.
While brain fog can is a persistent companion in our journey of women's health, incorporating these strategies could help lift the fog and restore mental clarity. If symptoms persist or significantly impact daily life, seeking guidance from a healthcare professional is essential for a personalised approach to managing and mitigating brain fog.
