At 38, I was considered young to have a full hysterectomy, which suddenly catapulted me into menopause overnight. Well, I say that, but the truth is, I'd been experiencing perimenopausal symptoms for at least three years, thanks to the fact that I only had one failing ovary left.
It's a strange place to be, especially when you're dealing with something that feels so significant, yet those around you may not fully understand.
Talking to women who have gone through menopause, I often get looks of disbelief, as if I'm too young to be dealing with this. On the other hand, when I talk to my friends who haven’t experienced it yet, I can sense the disconnect—they just don’t have a clue how it feels, though I know their time will come. This has been one of the most isolating parts of the experience, and it reminds me of so many other health issues I've faced.
Menopause is something all women or people assigned female at birth (AFAB) will go through, and it can be a very strange phase of our lives. The physical and emotional shifts can leave you feeling off-balance, out of sorts, and sometimes, just plain lost. But I've found that the best way to cope with these changes is to be open about what you're going through. Talking to those who have been there and truly understand can be incredibly validating and reassuring.
If you’re feeling isolated, joining a support group can be a great place to start ( It's something I want to start/create ). It offers a space to open up, share your experiences, and connect with others who know exactly what you're going through. It’s a reminder that you’re not alone in this journey.
Remember, there is help and support out there for you. Whether it's through friends, online communities, or healthcare professionals, reaching out can make all the difference. Menopause doesn’t have to be something you face in silence—by sharing our stories and supporting one another, we can make this transition a little easier for everyone involved x
